What it is

Remember Commodore's Christmas demo from 1982? The wind, the snow, the logo, and then the carols. We used to leave it running on the 64 all through the holidays. This is our version.

It opens the same way: a black screen, the wind, and snow that starts light and picks up, drifting onto the Comm-Ad♥re logo until it says Merry Christmas. Press a key and it fades into the first picture.

From there it's fifteen scenes, each with its own carol played by the SID chip through the classic Compute!'s Gazette Sidplayer. Snow falls outside, tree lights and candles twinkle, fires flicker, and the star over Bethlehem shines. When a song ends, the next picture fades in. When the last one is done, it starts over. About 27 minutes a round.

How to run it

It's a D81 disk image (the 1581's format: fifteen pictures and fifteen songs don't fit on a D64).

  • A real 64: copy it to the SD card of your Kung Fu Flash, SD2IEC, Ultimate or Pi1541 and load it from there. That's how we watch it: on an NTSC 64, from a Kung Fu Flash. It runs on PAL machines too.
  • A real 1581: write it to a 3.5" disk and LOAD"*",8,1 (use your drive number).
  • An emulator: drag it onto VICE (or attach it as drive 8) and it starts by itself.
